MAP4Y
Methodology for Mapping and Developing Potential
MAP4Y does not categorize a person into a personality type or a single box. It monitors the state of specific elements of potential along two dimensions: aware – unaware, and utilizing – not utilizing.
A single person can have different elements of their potential across all four quadrants simultaneously. A quadrant is not an identity. It is the current state of a specific potential, and that state can change.
What We Consider Potential
We understand potential as the available or developable capacity of an individual to generate value in a specific context. It can rest upon talent dispositions, knowledge, skills, experience, competencies, and other relevant internal and external resources.
It is not a synonym for raw talent. And one foundational premise determines the entire methodology:
Having potential does not mean utilizing it.
Between what a person has at their disposal and what they actually put to use in practice, there is often a profound gap. Bridging and working with that gap is the primary purpose of MAP4Y.
Four Quadrants, Eight States, Eight Strategies
ACTIVATED aware of it and uses it Balanced · Overextended
Balanced
Situation A strength that functions effectively; it needs to be cultivated and transferred into new situations.
Strategy sustain & develop
Overextended
Situation Used excessively or regardless of context. This is where top talent is most frequently burnt out and lost.
Strategy balance
BLOCKED aware of it and does not use it Constrained · Suppressed
Constrained
Situation The barrier resides in the external conditions created by the organization.
Strategy release
Suppressed
Situation The barrier resides in the individual's internal mindset and limiting beliefs.
Strategy unblock
NATURAL unaware of it and uses it Spontaneous · Taken for Granted
Spontaneous
Situation Exercised daily without being named; when the person departs, it vanishes with them.
Strategy bring to awareness
Taken for Granted
Situation The value of their contribution has become customary and assumed, both by themselves and by others.
Strategy appreciate
LATENT unaware of it and does not use it Undiscovered · Overlooked
Undiscovered
Situation Has not yet encountered the opportunity or context to emerge.
Strategy discover
Overlooked
Situation Signals from the environment were present, but were not recognized or received.
Strategy recognize
Eight action verbs form the decision-making engine of MAP4Y. They do not classify a service into a category; they determine what needs to happen with a given state of potential.
The Distinction That Changes Decisions
When potential is blocked, we do not yet know who needs to resolve it.
Suppressed
In one case, the individual holds themselves back – and coaching, working through limiting beliefs, and psychological safety will help.
Constrained
In the other, organizational conditions are standing in the way – and in that scenario, training cannot help. What helps is a leadership decision regarding authority, rules, opportunities, or what gets penalized within the company.
We make this distinction deliberately in every mapping engagement. Without it, development programs attempt to solve systemic challenges that training simply cannot resolve.
MAP4Y Cards
64 cards. A parable, a question, one concrete step.
Every card begins with a parable – the eagle raised among chickens; the man who traveled half the world looking for a treasure buried beneath his own stove. The story is not an ornament. It allows an individual to see their own situation without the reflexive need to defend themselves.
On the reverse side is the essence, the trap, a reflective question, and a micro-experiment – a small, safe step that can be taken within three days. Along with a line for a date and a single word: when someone draws the same card six months later, they see exactly what has shifted.
The cards do not diagnose. They do not measure, categorize, or claim that every potential exists within every person. Certain potential simply is not present in someone, and that is completely fine.

Essence and Trap
Most development approaches divide human traits into strengths and weaknesses. MAP4Y deliberately does not, because that does not match lived reality: the exact same strength can elevate a person in one moment and exhaust them in another.
Essence is the valuable core – what makes this quality fundamentally useful and generative.
Trap is not a weakness. It is the warning mode of that very same strength: what happens when it is used automatically, excessively, insufficiently, or without regard for the context.
Decisiveness → directiveness. Responsibility → carrying the burden for everyone. Empathy → inability to establish boundaries. Perseverance → persisting where it is time to let go. Analytical capability → analysis paralysis.
Essence and trap are intentionally placed on the same card. If they were separated, they would be interpreted as good versus bad. Placed together, the person asks a far better question: where between the two am I operating right now?

Micro-experiments
A card does not end with awareness. It culminates in action.
MAP4Y intentionally avoids the phrase “action item.” An action item creates pressure – I must do this right. An experiment cultivates curiosity – I will test this and observe what happens.
A sound micro-experiment is small, concrete, safe, executable within three days, observable, and evaluable.
In both individual development and team workshops, laying the cards across the table provides an immediate, tangible landscape of themes and pinpoints the single most meaningful next step.

What MAP4Y Does Not Do
It does not diagnose. It is not a psychological test or clinical diagnostic instrument.
It does not classify into personality types. The four quadrants are not four categories of human beings.
It does not claim you possess everything. Some potentials simply do not exist within you, and that is entirely healthy and expected.
It does not work entirely in isolation. What you are blind to regarding yourself, you cannot discover in a vacuum – an outside perspective is an essential part of the work.
Three Levels of Mapping
Individual
the state of specific elements of potential for a single person. A grounded foundation for reflection, developmental priorities, coaching, and micro-experiments.
Team
aggregates potentials, never people into boxes. Shows what the team possesses, what it utilizes, what remains dormant, and where barriers, concentrations, and gaps reside.
Organization
a strategic overview for executive leadership on available and mobilized potential, reserves, systemic blockers, concentration of critical know-how, and areas vital for future strategy.
At the team and organizational levels, individual data privacy is our foundational principle. An aggregated output is never an excuse to inappropriately expose individual profiles.
